Demons and other evil spirits mentioned in the book of Acts
By John Chopores
Acts Chapter five
Acts 5:16 Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
We see the Apostles doing some of the same works that Jesus did! Cf. Matthew 4:24 Then His fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them.
Mark 1:27 Then they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this? What new doctrine is this? For with authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him."
Acts Chapter eight
Acts 8:7 For unclean spirits, crying with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed; and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed.
Acts Chapter sixteen
Acts 16:16 ¶ Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling.
Acts 16:18 And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour.
He uses the Name of Jesus when casting out this evil spirit. Cf. Acts 4:12 "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."
Philippians 2:10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,
Acts Chapter nineteen
Acts 19:12 so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.
Acts 19:13 ¶ Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, "We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches."
Acts 19:15 And the evil spirit answered and said, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?"
Just saying the Name of Jesus, is not enough!
“Jesus I know (τον Ἰησουν γινωσκω [ton Iēsoun ginoskō]). “The (whom you mention) Jesus I recognize (γινωσκω [ginoskō])” and “the (whom you mentioned) Paul I am acquainted with (τον Παυλον ἐπισταμαι [ton Paulon epistamai]).” Clear distinction between γινωσκω [ginoskō] and ἐπισταμαι [epistamai].”
Acts 19:16 Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
The Greek word for “overpowered” is “katakurieuo” it means: “to subject someone or something to a superior force”.
